Carlisle's air quality? Poor, council says

CARLISLE - The air in and around Carlisle is not just bad; it is worse than the air in 96 percent of communities around the U.S.

That's according to the Carlisle Area Health and Wellness Foundation and the Philadelphia-based Clean Air Council, which released a report on the air quality in the Carlisle area yesterday.

While the findings are bad, they said, the good news is that steps can be taken to make the air more breathable.

Eric P. Cheung, senior staff attorney for the Clean Air Council, said one of those steps is a push in Pennsylvania to regulate or ban truckers' habit of leaving their trucks idling while they sleep, a practice that burns about a gallon of diesel fuel per hour.

States surrounding Pennsylvania have already put regulations on the practice.

Merck Predicts a More Robust 1Q Profit

Merck & Co. on Wednesday forecast a healthy first-quarter profit well above analysts' expectations for the recovering drugmaker and boosted its profit for all of 2007, citing strong revenues in the current quarter. The news helped push up shares 97 cents, or 2.3 percent, to close at $44.15 in trading on the New York Stock Exchange, with trading volume about 2 1/2 times normal. The Whitehouse Station-based company said it expects to post first-quarter earnings per share of 58 cents to 64 cents, or 63 cents to 67 cents excluding restructuring charges. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial on average were expecting only 60 cents, excluding charges. Merck, the maker of osteoporosis treatment Fosamax and Singulair for asthma and allergies, also said it expects earnings per share of $2.55 to $2.65 for the full year, excluding restructuring charges.

Indian River County School Board, parents chew over ideas on food ...

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — Karen Laverak didn't know her teenage daughter was allergic to almonds until the 15-year-old had a severe reaction at school requiring emergency medical attention.

The reaction didn't occur until 1 1/2 hours after her daughter, who attends Sebastian River High School, ate some of the nuts, Laverak told the School Board during a Tuesday workshop about how the district handles food allergies.
